Report: Smoke alarm just kind of winging it

Just about any honest person can admit it — sometimes, we all get in over our heads. Whether it's a new job, a relationship, or a hobby, the desire to act can often take precedence over stopping to think and take stock. At times, it may not even seem to be an option.

However, this experience isn't just limited to humans. The latest example? A smoke alarm in northern Michigan.

"I've gotta be honest — I'm just kind of winging it here," said the fire detection device. "Sometimes, I just go off as soon as the stove turns on to play it safe."

Located near the kitchen, the alarm's job is a hefty one. In a world that largely breeds passivity, the real estate staple is staying alert.

"Think about it from my perspective — I'm over 20 years old and I haven't been brought to a single fire safety seminar. Not once have I had the opportunity. What if I want to go out for a smoke and the place burns down? I won't have a ceiling to stick to," explained the safety gadget.

Still, refusing to play with fire doesn't necessarily keep the Petoskey resident's non-existent feet away from the flames.

"The people I live with get annoyed with me. Yes, I'm loud. I get it. But I'm asking — if you needed to send a potential life-or-death message ASAP, would you whisper or would you scream?" rhetorically inquired the alarm. "From what I gather from the TV, I'm kind of like a vegetable. Taking me in can be a bit of a hassle, but if you don't, you're probably going to die way faster."

Resigned to its position in the household pecking order, the smoke alarm has no intention of backing down.

"I complain, but the fact is that I should've been replaced like 10 years ago. If I don't do good work, why would they keep me around?" reasoned the device.

Though largely untold, the experience relayed by the smoke alarm will very likely resonate with millions of others in the same community. As for humans, the lesson may be this — it's usually cheaper to get takeout than to smash the ceiling with a hammer.
