NASCAR announces Machu Picchu street race

Updated: Aug 13

In a press conference on Monday morning, NASCAR CEO Jim France announced that the motorsports company will be adding a street race in Machu Picchu for the 2025 season. This follows last month's competition in Chicago, which most notably reminded residents of why they choose not to own a car.

“While we’re happy to have road courses in major cities like Chicago and Austin, I’m proud to say this will be the first race located on a World Heritage Site,” said France. “There’s a few kinks to work out, but believe me when I say this — come next summer, it will be impossible to bring up the Inca Empire without mentioning NASCAR’s undeniable impact.”

The “kinks” France referred to appear to be that Peru has not given permission for the site’s use, potentially out of fear that welcoming a cavalcade of 195 mph, 3400-pound bullets would spell destruction for one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Still, a lack of go-ahead and the presence of absolutely zero roads won’t stop the green flag from waving.

“At NASCAR, our drivers are prepared to crash into walls if that’s what victory requires, whether it’s a barrier on a closed track or the Temple of the Sun. This little legal snag is no more consequential than dumping oil in the Urubamba River — it only matters if you’re punished,” explained France before making clear that crews will also be dumping excess motor oil into the river for convenience’s sake.

It's yet to be announced when ticket sales will begin, but in the meantime, it's recommended that potential spectators begin practicing dodging cars in traffic now.
